Taste our The Periclean menu, the menu of Democracy
The equality in dining, stemming from the sacrificial supping in public celebrations, transforms to the quintessence of Democracy and introduces the Symposium culture. Portions are strictly equal and representative of the diverse foodstuff and cooking (native and imported) enjoyed by the Athenians of the Golden Age within the framework of everyday dining but also of the Symposium, augmented by philosophy, spirited conversation, performance such as joggling, music and dancing, and sexual pleasures. This culinary wealth and variety was an achievement of Athenian seapower, celebrated nonetheless in one of the most politically-motivated Periclean speeches as a direct function of Democracy and commerce at the time reigning supreme and introducing humanitarianism which was to grow from his cradle and dissipate into the world and ages!
